KAZI OWAIS AHMED
PhD Candidate
BS: New York University Abu Dhabi, 2020
Interests in Engineering:
Computer-Aided Design, and Additive Manufacturing
Current Lab Activity:
Kazi is currently working on developing an algorithm that can autodetect a part geometry and suggest which manufacturing method, i.e., subtractive, additive, or hybrid, would be most productive to make it.

WEIJUN ZHANG
PhD Candidate
MS: UC Davis, 2020
BS: Shaoxing University, 2015
Interests in Engineering:
CNC Machining, Additive Manufacturing, Mechanical Design, and Computer Aided Design
Current Lab Activity:
Weijun is actively engaged in researching the development of a Directed Energy Deposition (DED) control system. This innovative system is designed to achieve precise clad geometry and optimal temperature control, thereby enhancing productivity through real-time adjustments to energy and layer height. Simultaneously, the system’s impact on the material properties of as-built components, including residual stress measured through neutron diffraction, is being thoroughly investigated.

MARCO LAFIRENZA
Visiting Student
BS: Politecnico di Bari, 2018
MS: Politecnico di Bari, 2021
PhD: Politecnico di Bari, ongoing
Interests in Engineering:
Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing, Process monitoring, Optical sensors, Reverse Engineering, Metrology
Current Lab Activity:
Improvement of the already existing real-time Height Control system applied for the DED process through the installation of an additional camera. The goal is to increase the capabilities of the Height control system from 2D to 3D monitoring.
